Our Story
Our Mission & Vision
“Our mission is to be advocates for society’s most vulnerable young people”
Our Mission
Independence Development was founded in 2011 by Dr Michael, a clinical psychologist, who identified a lack of availability in specialised therapeutic care. Born to be a service that would work with the most severe cases, IDL envisioned a place where young people and adults could come and develop their independence through a range of therapeutic practices from caregivers with patience, unwavering commitment, and empathy.
IDL was created to be the advocates of the young people who often fall through the cracks of social services and CAMHs and provide them with the therapeutic care they so need. Challenging cases with young people are commonly difficult to place and their destructive behaviour sometimes results in a breakdown of their placement. We have sought to provide a solid foundation for all service users, even the most difficult of cases.
Our Values
Our commitment to excellence is grounded in a set of values that serve as both our compass and foundation. These values can be traced through every part of our service and are listed below:
- Diversity & Inclusivity: we embrace and celebrate the unique qualities that make each individual special. We foster an environment where everyone feels not just included, but an integral part of our close-knit community.
- Independence: independence and the promotion of it is a key value to us. By promoting independence, we contribute to the development of those in our care, improving their quality of life whilst instilling a real sense of autonomy.
- Person-Centred Care: through personalized care plans and support, we empower individuals to manage their health and well-being. Shared decision-making is encouraged, ensuring that information is tailored, accessible, and beneficial**
- Happiness: we believe everyone has the right to experience happiness, and we go above and beyond to try ensure this right is met. From contentment to joy, we strive to create an environment where every individual can be happy.
- Choice & Respect: We believe in the power of individual choice. Every person under our care has the right to make decisions about their own lives, and it is our duty to ensure that we give them all the tools possible to make positive choices.
- Honesty & Integretity: Transparency is the cornerstone of our operations. We are committed to open communication and always strive to do our best.
- Responsibility & Accountability: We take our roles as carers seriously. Each member of our team understands the significance of their contribution to the lives of the young people in our care.
